When we found out that our Ann Burns (Grainger) had died in the workhouse, Group member Olwyn felt the need to write the following.
What became of our Great Great Gran?
Born with the name Grainger-Ann,
She proudly bore two illegitimate sons
In the 1800’s it certainly won’t have been fun.
Ann was a proud Mother and brought the boys up well
But of their Father, alas
She would not tell.
She met a good man,
A Sailor, they say,
They wed and lived together with her boys,
Oh happy days!
Ann always worked to support her men,
What score would she get?
Of course; 10 out of 10.
To die alone in the workhouse,
After such a life of sharing,
Seems so unjust,
And she was so very caring.
Ann was a lady, who loved and cared selflessly,
To leave the world in such sad circumstances,
Unfair, unjust and tragically
Live on sweet Ann
Be carefree and gay,
Smell the sea and the flowers
And we’ll see you some day.
