22 April 1864. William Born 79, Northgate St. Hartlepool. He was the second illegitimate son of Ann Granger from Robin Hoods Bay.

8 June 1883 William’s nephew Robert Henderson Grainger (Jnr) is baptised at St. Hilda’s, Hartlepool.
16 December 1883. William’s nephew Robert Henderson Grainger (Jnr) is buried at Spion Kop Cemetery aged 7 months.
22 February 1885. It seems that William’s stepfather David Burns is lost in a storm aboard the Margaret and Ann which had set sail from Hartlepool. Press reports dated 2 March 1885 State no hope for the vessel.
28 April 1886 William’s Sister in Law, Jane Grainger is buried at Spion Kop Cemetery, aged 23.
1 May 1887 William’s Brother Robert marries Ann Elizabeth Shadforth at St Hilda’s Hartlepool. For details of the children they had see sheets for Robert Henderson Grainger.
27 September 1890. William marries Biddy Fox (Bridget) at St Hilda’s Hartlepool.
William was living in Wood St at the time and Biddy was living at Crescent House.
Biddy came from Easky, County Sligo and she was the daughter of a linen manufacturer called James Fox (deceased at time of wedding). The witnesses at the wedding were William’s Brother & his wife. (Robert & Ann Elizabeth Grainger.

November 1901. William takes part in the rescue of 3 crew of Trio, a Swedish ship that was wrecked off Hartlepool. He is awarded The Board of Trade Bronze Medal for Gallantry for saving life at sea. (SGM).
3 January 1902. William is presented with the Sea Gallantry Medal at The Royal Naval Reserve Battery, Hartlepool by the then Mayor of Hartlepool, Councillor M Harrison J.P.
January 1902. William is presented with a gold medal from the people of West Hartlepool for his bravery shown in the wreck of the Trio. A dinner is also held in honour of the rescuers.
29 May 1902. William & Biddy have a daughter Alice May Grainger
22 June 1902. Alice May Grainger is baptised. William is a Labourer, living at 22 Wood St, Hartlepool.

3 December 1911. William & Biddy are witnesses at a wedding at St. Hilda’s Hartlepool. Robert Nicholson a 59-year-old shipyard labourer married Sarah Ann Hill aged 51, nee Stoker, a widow both of 10, Wood St. Hartlepool.
24 November 1912. Son, James Fox Grainger marries Mary Elizabeth Boagey at St Hilda’s, Hartlepool
26 September 1914. Granddaughter Ellen Horsley Grainger born to James Fox & Mary Elizabeth Grainger.

1927. William & Biddy’s daughter, Alice May Grainger marries Edward M Roach.
Late 1920’s to Mid 1930’s. Sometime in this period William met James Madison Carpenter. Carpenter was an American collector of traditional songs, drama, music, narrative and children’s folklore. Carpenter toured England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales over a number of years. His collection is kept at the Library of Congress in the U.S.A. Carpenter was given Road Rhyme For Hartlepool by William. In his notes Carpenter described William as a “Collier Sailor.” On the “Concord.”
Cliffy Wanley, William’s Grandson, informed his daughter that he could remember the American. He went on to say that Carpenter paid William to look after a boat, which he had bought.
Cliffy couldn’t remember the name of the boat but described it as having a varnished finish. Cliffy thought that the boat was sold to a Hartlepool Pilot when Carpenter returned to America.
28 July 1934. Daughter in law Mary Elizabeth Grainger is buried aged 43.She was the wife of James Fox Grainger.
17 March 1937. Great granddaughter Nellie Grainger is buried aged 8. Daughter of William David Grainger.
7 Jan 1939. Daughter Ethel Rose Grainger marries John Joseph Jackson at St Mary’s Hartlepool.
18 April 1941. Great Grandson William David (Sansom?) Grainger is buried aged 17. Son of William David Grainger.
24 May 1941. Granddaughter Esther Matilda Grainger married Francis Frederick Flush.
6 December 1941. Granddaughter Ellen Horsley Grainger married Alexander Duncan.
17 November 1942. Great Grandson James Alexander Duncan of Middleton is buried.

Sept 1943. William’s Great-grandson Brian Flush is born, the son of Francis Flush & Esther Matilda Grainger.
11 Oct 1943. Burial of Great-grandson Brian Flush aged 12 days at Spion Kop Cemetery, Hartlepool.
30 November 1945. William’s wife, Biddy dies aged 78.
3 December 1945. Biddy is buried at West View Cemetery, Hartlepool.
3 September 1946. William dies at Howbeck infirmary aged 85. (This was the age stated at the time in the local press at the time, but l think he was 82 or 83.) Causes of death were Chronic Myocarditis and Chronic Bronchitis. His death certificate states that he was a retired watchman for the Port and Harbour Commision.
6 September 1946. The Northern Daily Mail includes an article about William’s
passing. The article informs the reader that William was a life long supporter of Hartlepool Rovers. Also that William sailed Windjammers and early iron steamers and that he fished for herring when Hartlepool had its own fleet of keelboats. William was also a Foyboatman, Ferryman and he rang the fog bell on Hartlepool Breakwater.
